Only lightly, should European Union countries adjust their domestic regulations for a new directive concerning audiovisual services, which is broadening the scope to include web videos. Slovakia’s interpretation of this recommendation manifested itself in a great deal of red tape and high penalties. According to the new law, it should solve the problem of web video content in two ways. One regulation package applies to video-on-demand. The other one applies to internet broadcasting, as well as for television. If video servers breach some regulations, there will be a threat of fines up to almost 100,000 euros. The Ministry in other areas, according to the European directive, was loosening rules, especially in favor of television. According to the proposed amendment, daily limits for commercials should be retracted for private broadcasters. Nowadays, they can have at most 15% of daily broadcasting time for commericals (20% along with teleshopping) and interrupt shows only every 45 minutes. If the amendment passes, the 12-minute commercial limit for one-hour broadcasts will remain, but television will be able to interrupt shows every 30 minutes. The amendment also allows product placement.
