The Zvolen dairy factory Mliekoservis has already failed twice. And it was always with an attempt to produce powdered milk for babies. Now it is being taken over by a French dairy group Senoble, which has big plans for the factory. It is bringing in its main business, yoghurt production, and at the same time it’s closing two already purchased dairies in the center of Zvolen and Rimavská Sobota. Mliekoservis is one of the few dairy factories built after the fall of Socialism. Its founders were Slovak businessmen who wanted to offer Slovak mothers homemade formula milk. They were not successful. The project was halted after Italian financial partners stopped financing it. There was left in Zvolen an incomplete factory and expensive Danish technology which had been bought with loans from the former State Relief Fund of Agriculture and Food Industry. From the state’s frozen debts there was also a second attempt to start production of dairy-based baby food. Debt from Mliekoservis, along with a greater debt burden of several companies was bought from the state by the private equity group Penta. And the group assessed the debt, selling it to the Dutch investment group Middle Europe Investments. I Pg 30
