In 2002, the government decided on the direction of the Welding Research Institute when during the privatization process it chose (out of three interested parties) the offer of the Slovak Industrial Institute, with the explanation that along with universities it has the potential to broaden the activities of the Welding Research Institute. Now we can say that this decision was the beginning of the end for this organization’s scientific reputation. The years only proved the words of the former minister for the Management and Privatization of National Property Marian Machova, who called the decision a gift from the government. Bratislava’s Slovreal wanted to pay 120 million crowns. Another interested party was offering 102 million crowns and a business plan focussed on welding. That was Prvá Zváračská, founded by former employees of the Welding Research Institute and the current competition of the Institute in certification and schooling activities. These were people who remember times when research results were bringing in over one-fifth of its revenue. The current director of the Welding Research Institute – Slovak Industrial Institute Peter Klamo says, that research is developing, but that it’s difficult to quantify it. Pavol Blaškovitš, professor at the Slovak Technical University and head of the Scientific Committee of WRI – SII, tried to quantify it anyway, using the figures from the annual report. According to him, in the year before last research made up 6% of revenues. Ten years ago it was almost 22%.
