Štefan Harabin is only one step away from becoming the most important reformer in Fico’s government. The Ministry of Justice prepared a systematic overhaul. Its boss introduced a law by which he newly redistributed authority in the judiciary. Or better put: he found a way how to reinforce his top position for years even after he’s no longer minister. He wants to transfer the highest authority to the head of the Slovak Supreme Court, which he wants to be. Only members of parliament have the power to stop him now. At the beginning of next week the Court Council will vote for a new head of the Slovak Supreme Court. Harabin, whose ambition to come back to the same position has been known for a long time, isn’t taking a big risk. The Court Council is a body that fully supports him. Two examples: when in September last year, the Parliament was discussing a proposal for Harabin’s dismissal, the judges of the Court Council stood up for him. When two months later Judge Jana Dubovcová criticized him, the council reproved her.
