A great chance to increase the number of your possessions: this is how Jaroslav Haščák, one of the five owners of the private equity group Penta, perceives the crisis. He wants to make more money now than before. In the past, Penta was happy with a 25% growth every year. Now it wants at least 50%. “It might sound strange, but if I look at it from a businessman’s perspective, I’m happy to face the crisis and expand my business through new acquisitions,” says this manager. And he adds that Penta increased the demanded rate for the annual assessment of its investments from 25 to 50%. He emphasizes that the group has real projects with such growth potential on its table, even though they bring higher risks. Penta wants to go into the sectors most affected by the crisis. There, it looks for companies which are prosperous in such a way that unlike their competition, they have a chance of survival, being able to grow at the expense of their competitors. “I’m not saying that now we are completely refusing to invest in sectors such as energy or health care, whose sales and financial flow won’t stop without reason. But now everyone wants to invest in certainty and the prices of such assets are rising,” he explains. This does not suit Penta, because high purchase prices are lowering the potential for profit. Simply, such projects for Penta can hardly compete with those with the potential to bring in 50% in revenues. I Pg 32
