Minister of Culture Marek Maďarič’s desire to build a new modern complex for Slovak Television and Radio is stronger than the economic crisis and the coalition’s cooperation. Only one month ago, these reasons forced the author of this idea to halt the megalomanic public project. But not for long. Last week the government again received and approved this public private procurement project to build a shared complex. In numbers it’s 138 million euros. This is the amount which the developer of the project should invest in the construction of the complex, which is supposed to be built in front of the new Slovak National Theater; as well as in technical equipment which is approximately one-third of the total investment. The Ministry of Culture is submitting the project despite disagreement with coalition partner ĽS-HZDS. According to SITA, at the beginning of the week head of party Vladimír Mečiar complained that the construction work is continuing regardless of the fact that one party is against the idea and that it will be, according to him, a loss of over 116 million euros for Slovakia. “It is more business with the site in front of Slovak Television, rather than a matter of the media center which could be done in a different way. We have to talk,” said Mečiar. The Ministry of Finance, which like the Ministry of Culture is also controlled by Smer, has some reservations about the project.
