By the end of last month the European Parliament approved that from 2011, all new cars in the EU will have environment-friendly tires. This will be mandatory. By decreasing their rolling resistance, lower consumption should be feasible. This date doesn’t concern owners of old cars. The Parliament also approved that from 2012, it will be easier for consumers to decide from different kinds of energy-saving tires, involving such factors like fuel-saving, road grip, and volume of tread noise. There will be seven classes, from the most economical A, to the least economical G. Brussels claim that new measures can decrease fuel consumption by one-fifth and so CO2 emissions will fall. Environment-friendly tires could, according to the Euro officials‘ calculations, save almost 6 billion liters of fuel and approximately 15 million tons of emitted CO2 annually. New regulations are yet to be approved by the EU Ministry Board. Also the only domestic tire producer in Púchov is waiting for their final design for the tires. This company was bought from a Slovak family Rosina by a German company called Continental. This fourth biggest tire producer in the world has two firms there. Continental Matador Truck Tires produces tire casings for commercial vehicles, and Continental Matador Rubber produces casings for passenger cars.
